WOODHEAD Family

First Generation

1. Arthur Branton1 WOODHEAD (#980) (living status unknown).

Arthur Branton WOODHEAD and Alice CHALMERS had the following children:

child 2 i. John Arthur Mcdonald2 WOODHEAD(418) (#981) was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia about 1925. John died 31 July 1943 in Singapore, China, at 18 years of age.(419) Hello Declan, Found some new information on the Commonwealth War Graves Comm. site regarding cousin Jack. He died 31 Jul 1943 near the Burma Thai border & is buried in the Thanbyuzat War Cemetery, Burma. The website with the number for Jack is: http://yard.ccta.gov.uk/cwgc/register.nsf...reateservicecertificate?openagent&2091759 Quite interesting, 3-4 pages re location etc.. We always thought he was buried in Changi, Singapore. Sad to say that even had we known these details when we were living in Burma, we would not have been allowed to visit the cemetery, due to very strict travel conditions imposed by the Military Government. There is a large War Cemetery just out of Rangoon, where sevices were held each Anzac Day, which we attended. We lived in Rangoon from Jan.1982 until Mar.1984, where Brian was working for the UNDP. We are working on your request for information on Chalmers' in our area. Will probably include something about the Gold Rush. Obviously, Joseph came looking for gold, as all his children were born on the goldfields. Pity poor Ann, trying to raise a family, probably initially under canvas. Will attach an anonymous artists impression of probably the largest nugget in the world & the people who found it, they came from the Scilly Isles. They called the nugget the Welcome Stranger. Joseph would have been prospecting in this area at some time & wouldn't have been far away when it was found. May have even joined the rush to the area after the find. In recent times near Wedderburn a large nugget was found at the site of a small school, which Dad had worked on some years before. The school had been closed & was being removed. Hope you find this of some interest! Best Wishes to all, Betty, Brian & Penny. ID986

child + 3 ii. Kenneth Leslie WOODHEAD was born about 1925.

child 4 iii. William WOODHEAD (#983) (still alive).

child 5 iv. Donald WOODHEAD (#984) (still alive).
