Jane or Jean TOCHER

Birth: None available. Her eldest child born 1819 therefore was married 1818 or before, was 20 years of age or more, so born 1798 or before. All her children were born in Marnoch parish. Baptism see my External Folder Extracts/census 1851 no.35 Marnoch parish. This census (name spelt Jean) is the lead as to who and where her father was, and where he was born. This indicates that her father was a John Tocher born about 1768 in Fyvie parish. Her mother is not mentioned. There are two listings of baptisms in the baptismal book for Forgue and consequently there are two records for the person we are looking for. Her name is given as "Jean"in the first record and "Jane" in the second all else being the same. I have photocopies of both actual records. See External Folder: Extracts/Baptisms nos.14,15 (actual record) Her mother is found by finding all the children of the father in Forgue parish, where witnesses to the baptism help to indicate the correct family. The place of father's residence and place of baptism, also help. The baptism of Jean/Jane 27-4-1796, The witnesses were james Cruickshank and james Hay both residing in the same place as the father, namely Commisty. Another child has the same witnesses and like Jean/Jane no mention of the mother but a third child John has the mother's name mentioned as isobel HAY and one change in the witnesses namely Peter Cran for James Hay. Notice the mother's name is the same as one of the witnesses "Hay". It is probable that isobel Hay was also jean/jane's mother but is not certain. Peter Chalmers (Ayr) ID: 736, told me that her death cert. shows her mother as "Elizabeth" informant being - her son, william. Wedding: None found but baptismal records of children and census 1851 show that she was married. Death: see External Folder: Extracts/Marriages no. 14 marriage of her son James, She is mentioned in this as alive while her husband is mentioned as deceased. So death was after this date 11 April 1863. See External Folder: Extracts/Census 39 This indicates that she was alive in census of '61,'71 but probably not in '81. See External Folder: Extracts/Death no. 2 date of cert. 29 November 1872 Occupation: In the census 1841 described as "spinner of linnen residing at South St Abirchirder. In 1861 and '71 as a knitter residing North St. Aberchirder. North St was known locally as Back St.
